First Battle Gameplay Tips

The initial battle screen can be a little daunting but relax it isn't so bad.

Across the top is your ships' HP/DP bar (health), damage points you have dished out. Along the bottom is you ship direction (compass) and speed gauge. Available weapons and ammos.

TIP: Always travel fast. A fast moving ship is harder to hit. DD's are small fast ships and should always be moving.

At first you will want to engage with your guns, but don't rush in and bring too much attention to yourself.

TIP: If you are getting shot at too much, retreat behind your team mates.

TIP: Lead your target the further away your target is. Shells travel slowly, you will miss unless you aim in front of your target.

TIP: Don't travel in straight lines. Keep spinning and turning. Make yourself a hard target to hit.

TIP: When firing, bring all guns to bear on the target by turning to your broadside (or partly broadside). When the enemy are reloading turn your ship away form them. Give them the smallest target to shoot at.

Use auto aiming (clicking on the target) until you get into later Battleships. This is especially helpful as manual aiming in small ships is extremely tricky because of such fast-moving ships.

Target ships of similar level and line up a torpedo run. Torpedoes are your strongest weapon in early ships. But remember, they are slow and easy to avoid unless your target is very close. Always watch for torpedoes and listen out for torpedo warnings.

Be smart: learn to run away from, dodge, or steer between incoming waves of torpedoes. If you cant avoid being hit by torpedoes, take as few direct impacts as possible.

Surviving until the end, doing damage, sinking ships and capturing islands yield better result.

All of these tips are the key components of becoming a strong DD player. Many of the skills translate to almost all other ship types.

Captain's Log - Episode 1

Week 1, upon starting the game the changes are immediately clear. You choose a nation and captain. The captain can unlock or access all ships within that nation's ship tree without having to stick to a specific line.

I decided upon having a German KM captain primarily because of the range advantage their battleships had in navyfield.

I immediately plunged into battle with the first destroyer. I had to adjust to the ship speeds, weapons and torpedoes. The torpedoes can now be set to proximity, a helpful thing for new players.

It is clear that torpedoes make destroyers very lethal against all low level ships, particularly the larger cruisers and early battleships.

The gameplay is frenetic in the traditional early-game hobbit-war style. Players are still learning to control ships, fire weapons and capture islands. But things did improve, and it wasn't long before I was driving my first light cruiser.

Sinking ships is great, but destroyers have to pick the right time to strike. Charging first into battle attempting to offload a salvo of torpedoes wont work against a whole team of players who know what you're up to. Also destroyers have weak armour and health.

Capping islands is also a new thing to deal with. And they provide you with sight, which is quickly becomes crucial, as does the ability to work with your team. Destroyers can get to these islands fast to cap them.

My first week has proved to be challenging and fun.

Starting up the game

To begin, simply log in to your account. For Navyfield 1 veterans the differences begin here, but don't be alarmed.

Once logged in you will get to select a captain, you have 6 in total on your account. Then select a nation. What are the differences between the Nations?

This is really for you to find out. But if Navyfield 1 is anything to go by then the nations generally adhere to the the same ship advantages and weaknesses as before (Note: content is subject to change)
As per NF1 the 4 Nations are as follows:

  • KM: Longest range BB's (lower dmg, fast reload), Good CV's (good fighters), Good SS,

  • RN: Strong BB's (high dmg, high def, Average CV's, Average SS,

  • USN: Good BB's (good dmg, reload and range), Excellent CV's (strong fighters), Good SS,

  • IJN Defensive BB's (high angle), Torpedo masters (DD's, CL, CA), Strong Bombing CV's, High dmg SS

Im only comparing the original 4 nations until new ones come along. As this is early in the life of NF2 some details may not be accurate.

Once you select a nation and captain you will enter the shipyard/ dock. Here you can setup your ship, chat with others, enter a matchmaking battle, join a fleet etc...
